Understanding the "new membership freeze" issue
Hi Dan and David,
A Locations member posted recently asking about the possibility of a new membership freeze for 817 Locations, and one of you explained why a freeze isn't possible. I went back to re-read, but the post isn't there.
Because of the strike and the ensuing slowdown, it seems counterintuitive to me that new members would be allowed to join a union when so many members aren't working. I've never understood the explanation, and I'm wondering if you could break it down for me here. Other members have asked me about this, so the explanation may help them as well.
Could you please explain, in simple terms, why producers can hire anyone to work in our department, and why those people can then become members of 817? Is it simply because we do not have a roster?
Thank you,
Jennifer

Hey Jennifer,
As you know we attempted to negotiate a roster in the last round of negotiations and unfortunately was not able to get it. It is once again a suggested proposal, and for good reason.
The roster does need to be negotiated before we implement it.
We are making every attempt to get the word out and promote the use our availability list and we hope that the location community does the same. If any Location Manager or UPM is looking to hire someone, please direct them to our availability list for options.
